Monthly Public Sector Developer Dinner Event: SharePoint 2010 as a Development Platform Series

Welcome to the monthly public sector developer dinner event. For the next several months, we will focus on SharePoint 2010 Development starting January 2011 and kick off the series with a two-part discussion: introduction to SharePoint 2010 development and  SharePoint 2010 customization and branding. Future events will cover basic and advanced SharePoint 2010 development topics -- web parts, workflows, sandboxed solutions, Business Connectivity Services, Excel Services, Azure and cloud computing integration, content management, search, to name a few. If you are interested to present a topic, please let us know.

Branding Custom Sites in SharePoint 2010 (60 minutes)

In this session we will discuss branding techniques to create custom internet sites in SharePoint 2010. While SharePoint 2010 introduces many innovative techniques such as the new ribbon, it also produces challenges for designers when the design is built for the Internet. What do you do with the ribbon for anonymous users? How do you deal with fixed width sites when SharePoint 2010 uses JavaScript to dynamically size? How do we deal with the new theming framework? What 508 rules should we keep in mind while working with SharePoint 2010?
This session will address all those questions as we work with a government website for Treasury that has been branded for the Internet based on a design prior to SharePoint 2010.
