AJAX Enabling ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts with "Atlas"

I posted another Channel 9 screencast covering another feature of ASP.NET “Atlas” yesterday morning. However, I didn’t get around to blogging about it. Here’s the description:

“Building on concepts from his previous screencast, Microsoft Federal Developer Evangelist Marc Schweigert demonstrates more AJAX enabling capabilities of ASP.NET "Atlas." You'll see how to AJAX enable ASP.NET 2.0 Web Parts with a few simple steps.”

You can view the screencast here.

This one is super short (3 minutes 43 seconds). I’m just about done with the “server-centric” set of screencasts. I’ll move on to the “client-centric” series next. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

great video. i followed your video and everything works without a postback. however, the design mode doesn’t work anymore (not able to drag webparts in IE or FF). i can narrow this down to the EnablePartialRendering="True" setting on the scriptmanager (as shown in the video). when this setting is ‘true’ then i cannot drag&drop when it is ‘false’ i can drag&drop but with a postback. has anyone else or the author experienced this…

maybe you can post the source code for this video? that would help

ah, when placing the webpartmanager inside the updatepanel solves the problem i had. note that my design mode switch is also part of the updatepanel, moving this switch out of the updatepanel solves it too.

I’ve been working with Atlas and web parts for over three days now and have yet to get drag and drop in design mode to work without a post-back. I believe I’ve tried every possible combination and setting, and it simply doesn’t work.

*Exactly* which versions of visual studio, AJAX, asp.net futures CTP, etc. do you need to make this work? I have tried many combinations of Visual Studio 2005, Orcas, AJAX, ASP.Net Futures ctp with web.preview dll’s etc. to no avail. Putting the WebParts inside of an UpdatePanel always breaks the design mode.
