With the upcoming release of Visual Studio 2005, there's a ton of new functionality around Visual design and validation of connected systems. The article available at https://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnvs05/html/DisSysDesSt.asp does a good job of laying out the vairous components like the Application Designer (AD), the Logical Datacenter Designer (LDD), the System Designer (SD), and the Deployment Designer (DD).
