Moved to ASP.NET

As previously announced, I have made my new home at http://weblogs.asp.net/ptorr/ My “first post” is here. I hope to have some real content out there soon… Now I’m off to see Stuck On You, which should be horribly offensive yet hilariously funny.

Moving to asp.net!

This is just a quick post to say I’ve moved to weblogs.asp.net and after this week won’t be posting on gotdotnet any more. Now it looks like I’ll have to figure out how to patch up WordBlogX to work with .Text; assuming it has a web service interface, that should be pretty easy. If not……

Testing from InfoPath

I decided to build a simple InfoPath form based on the BlogX web service. Seems to be a pretty painless experience, except of course that I only get to enter plain text into the textbox. Oh and there doesn’t appear to be an easy way to set a Text Box as a “Password” box that…

Redefining a function in JScript

Taking a leaf out of Eric’s book, I’m going to re-post a question I received in mail here. The question was (essentially): How do you re-define a function in JScript, and keep the parameters intact? Simple! There are (at least) two ways to do it: 1) Just re-define the function using an expression:    //…

More geeky language stuff

British English tends to have more irregular forms than American English (learnt vs learned, spelt vs. spelled, etc.) so why don’t we say “ust” instead of “used”?

Doing our own Thing

I was at Borders (whaddayaknow, they redirect to Amazon!) in Redmond looking for something to do with my Little Brother when I came across this book. Given the recent blogs by Eric and myself, I thought it would be a good read. I also picked up The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Psychology on a whim…

Developers frustrated by Administrators

A link on Slashdot points to a rant about why one developer thinks that administrators are the scum of the earth. There are some good counter arguments on the comments page. It’s interesting because we spend quite a bit of time at work trying to make sure that the products we design for developers will…

Collapsing vocabulary

Eric recently had a post that generated a lot of comments about how the spelling of various words in the English language has changed over the years. One thing that drives me batty is the number of people who don’t know (or, perhaps more accurately, can’t be bothered to account for) the difference in meaning…

What does “Save As…” mean, anyway?

I’m in the middle of writing another blog entry about saving (note to self: add a link later) which made me want to write briefly about something related that bothers me quite regularly. Professionally, that is, not personally 😉 A lot of applications (like Microsoft Office Word, for example, which I’m using right now) have…

VSTO doc team blogging

Paul Cornell (Documentation manager for the VSTO group) has started a blog and it looks like other members of the team may contribute. Cool! Also note that at some stage this month I (along with the other GDN bloggers) will be moving my blog to weblogs.asp.net. They promise me that feeds and comments and posts…
