The Smithsonian Institution has begun adding historical photos to The Commons, a Flickr project site launched jointly with the Library of Congress back in January to host publicly held, rights-free images. The key goals of The Commons project is, as stated by Flickr:
"…to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world’s public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer.
The Smithsonian will eventually contribute 2000 photographs from its collection of historically significant images dating from the 1800’s to the present.
