Announcing the Summer 2009 MSDN “Suburban” Roadshow Series

MSDNSuburbanRoadshow_thumb Bill Zack and I are happy to announce that we’ll be kicking off a late spring/early Summer 2009 series of the MSDN “Suburban” Roadshow!  There’s a tendency for Microsoft (and other other companies) to host live events in NYC as it’s the center of our area.  But, as suburbanites ourselves, Bill & Peter know it can be a pain to take a day off of work and fight the elements to trek into Manhattan.  One extra hassle can keep you from improving your skills and learning about the newest technologies.  Don’t let that hold you back any longer!

Our Spring 2009 series will be making stops throughout the ‘burbs in north and central Jersey.  Ironically, we also know that for urbanites in the big city, getting to the ‘burbs can be a major ordeal for you too!  Many Manhattan-ites don’t own cars, and the suburbs are not mass transit friendly.  So, we’ll bring the “Suburban” Roadshow back to NYC also.

We are scheduling the “Suburban” roadshow events to occur on the same day as the local user group in all locations. So, if you take a half-day off to join us at the roadshow, you’ll get a full day of content by sticking around for the user group sessions in the evening.  The Roadshows run 1pm – 5pm, and most of the user groups will run from 6-8pm.

Here’s the Summer 2009 agenda line up:

Up, Up, and Away!  Storage in the Microsoft Cloud

The Azure Services Platform provides a rich set of cloud-based storage options for building both cloud resident and hybrid cloud + on-premise applications.  This session will show you how to leverage Windows Azure Blobs, Tables and Queues as well as the new fully relational SQL Data Services.

Developing on Microsoft Windows 7

Building applications that are easy to use, visually appealing, and that offer high performance is a challenge that developers face every day. Innovative applications can greatly improve the user experience, empowering companies to differentiate their services and solutions. However, developers are increasingly asked to do more in less time, while also optimizing the power and performance requirements of their applications.

The Windows 7 platform makes it easy for developers to create engaging, user-friendly applications by providing familiar tools and rich development features that allow them to take advantage of the latest PC capabilities.  In this session we will explore the new Taskbar and Jump Lists, the Scenic Ribbon, file management with Libraries, and Windows Web Services among many other enhancements to the new operating system.

Using MS AJAX & jQuery with ASP.NET

As AJAX has risen in popularity over the past few years, most web developers have found themselves spending more time programming in JavaScript.  This has led to a rise in JavaScript frameworks to make this style of programming easier.  In 2007, Microsoft released its own AJAX library.  At the same time, an open source JavaScript library called jQuery started gaining in popularity.  In late 2008, Microsoft announced that it would be supporting jQuery as a part of ASP.NET going forward.

Both of these libraries work great together with ASP.NET’s WebForms and new MVC framework.  In this session we’ll explore how you can use these JavaScript libraries to enhance your web applications.  We’ll also look at the tools you’ll want to have in your toolbox when doing AJAX programming, as well as how to troubleshoot typical issues you’ll run into.
