PerformancePoint Planning Installation

Planning Server installation

Planning Server is deployed in two stages: software installation, and software configuration.

PerformancePoint Planning Server software is copied to the target computer and then configured during the second stage of setup.

The two configuration options are:

1. Stand alone: this option configures all the planning server components on one machine including the planning server databases. To run complete configuration SQL server must be install on the target system

2. Custom: This option configures one, two or all the planning server components. This is the option that allows the planning server database to reside on another system. In a distributed, multi-server topology, you may have to perform the custom configuration process on multiple systems.

Planning Server is deployed in two stages: software installation, and then software configuration.

First, the PerformancePoint Server software is installed on the computer. Everything necessary to run and configure PerformancePoint Server is thereby available for configuration.

In a distributed, multiserver topology, you may have to perform the installation process on multiple systems.

The configuration stage of the process involves use of Planning Server Configuration Manager to configure the computers that are running Planning Server software. After you run the configuration manager, the servers are ready to be used. Note that the client installations (Planning Business Modeler and PerformancePoint Add-in for Excel) perform installation and configurations in a single step.

Planning Server Configuration Manager automatically runs after the initial server installation. Through Planning Server Configuration Manager you choose the servers that you want to configure, for example the Web sites, and the computers that run SQL Server.

You can run Planning Server Configuration Manager multiple times. For example you may configure the Planning Web Service and later return to configure the Administration Service.

Planning Server single computer installation

All the server components in Planning Server can be installed on a single computer. This stand-alone configuration is used for testing, development, and proof of concept for Planning Server. Planning Server setup is two-fold. First, an .msi file runs the Planning Server installation and copies all necessary installation files to the hard drive of the local computer. Next, use the Planning Server Configuration Manager to complete the installation.

Planning Server distributed installation

Planning Server installation includes three services and a system database, which can be installed on one or more computers in your topology. Any combination of the services can be installed on the computers in your PerformancePoint Server topology. This means all three services can be installed on the same computer or you can install each service on a separate computer, or you can have the services distributed in any manner in between.

The PerformancePoint Server installation includes:

· Planning System Database

· Planning Process Web Service

· Remote Administration Service

Note:

It is possible to install multiple instances for each component on additional computers in a clustered or Network Load Balanced environment. This is considered an advanced deployment and should only be performed by experienced IT professionals.

The system database requires a SQL Server 2005 SP2 computer. PerformancePoint Server also requires SQL Server to host Planning application databases (each application that is created in Planning Server requires its own database). Additionally, Planning Server requires at least one computer in the topology to be running SQL Server Analysis Services, which contains the OLAP cubes that store business data.

For both SQL Server and SQL Server Analysis Services, you can have one or more computers in the topology. This means a distributed environment is possible for both the Planning Server services and SQL Server relational services and Analysis Services.
