Creating KPIs from PerformancePoint Planning Cubes
PerformancePoint Planning cubes are generally more targeted smaller cubes than your general cubes created from your data warehouse. These cubes require a different finesse when creating scorecards from them. When creating scorecards off of PerformancePoint Planning cubes, it is typically easier to generate the KPIs individually and then add them to a blank scorecard, rather than using the scorecard wizard. There are two options you have when creating KPIs against your PerformancePoint Planning cubes. The first is to create a very generic KPI, that then gets dimensionality applied to it in the scorecard. The second is to create a separate defined KPI for each of the accounts or dimension members in your cube. The below examples are based off of the Alpine Ski House Sample Data cube.
Option A - Creating a generic KPI and applying dimensionality in the scorecard
1. Right click on KPIs on the Workspace Browser and select New KPI.
2. Select Blank KPI and click OK.
3. Name your KPI, something like Value, optionally assign a folder and grant read permissions. Click Finish.
4. Click the link in the Data Mappings column for Actual.
5. Select Change Data Source, select your Planning cube.
6. Select Value for the measure in the Dimensional Data Source Mapping window.
7. Add a dimensional filter - select the Scenario.All Members dimension in the Dimension Selector window. Click OK.
8. Click the Default link in the Default column and select the Actuals member. When finished your screen should look as follows:
9. Add additional dimension members in a similar manner. For this example, I will only add one additional selection, limiting my accounts down to only the Income Statement Accounts. Click OK.
10. Repeat steps 4 through 9, assigning the Target value.
11. Now, create a scorecard. Right click on Scorecards and select New Scorecard.
12. Click All in the Category selection and select the Blank Scorecard in the Template area, click OK.
13. Name your scorecard, optionally assign a folder and permissions, click Finish.
14. Drag you new Value KPI onto the scorecard rows. Optional: you can right click on Value and override the name, in this example, I rename it to Income Statement.
15. Drag time period selections onto the columns of the scorecard.
16. Drag your accounts onto the rows of the scorecard under the Value KPI. You will need to create your own nesting similar to the dimension structure as follows:
17. Publish your scorecard, add it to a Dashboard Page and Export it to Sharepoint.
Option B - Creating separate KPIs for dimensional members
1. Right click on KPIs on the Workspace Browser and select New KPI.
2. Select Blank KPI and click OK.
3. Name your KPI, optionally assign a folder and grant read permissions. Click Finish.
4. Click the link in the Data Mappings column for Actual.
5. Select Change Data Source, select your Planning cube.
6. Select Value for the measure in the Dimensional Data Source Mapping window.
7. Add a dimensional filter - select the Scenario.All Members dimension in the Dimension Selector window. Click OK.
8. Click the Default link in the Default column and select the Actuals member.
9. Add additional dimension members in a similar manner. I will create this KPI for Advertising - Agency expenses and select the Advertising - Agency member from the Account.Member Name dimension . Click OK.
10. Repeat steps 4 through 9, assigning the Target value.
11. Repeat steps 1 through 10 for each KPI.
12. Now, create a scorecard. Right click on Scorecards and select New Scorecard.
13. Click All in the Category selection and select the Blank Scorecard in the Template area, click OK.
14. Name your scorecard, optionally assign a folder and permissions, click Finish.
15. Drag you new KPIs onto the scorecard rows.
16. Drag time period selections onto the columns of the scorecard.
17. Publish your scorecard, add it to a Dashboard Page and Export it to Sharepoint.
