The passion and enthusiasm found in student developers of Pakistan is just great and we’ve witnessed a great acceleration in adoption for Windows Phone platform by our local developer’s community. Today I’m super thrilled to feature BuRsted for Windows Phone by two student developers that does certainly raise the bar higher. Let’s hear from the developers themselves,
Could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
We are both undergraduate students at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). Sara, majoring in Biology, has a vivid interest in art and design. Although pursuing a pure science degree, she always exceled at the arts, and even spent time learning Photoshop and graphics from online tutorials.
I’m Muhammad Saad and on the contrary, I was always more interested in programming and thus majoring in Computer Science. However, developing apps for phones always interested me. After extra hours spent teaching myself, I even saved up pocket money to buy a smartphone to experiment with the different possibilities.
How the idea of the BuRsted came to you?
In our freshman year, a project for an introductory programming course introduced me to making games, and it really caught my interest. When I bought a smartphone, I realized that games have a greater market as compared to other apps. Games were also one area where Sara’s artistic skills could be fully utilized.
We experimented with different ideas for games and brainstormed strategies and levels. However, amongst our various attempts, BuRsted was the one which seemed most plausible and likeable by a large audience. Thus we started work on it during the summers.
Why you decided to implement this idea specifically on Windows Phone?
Windows phones are very popular, but are still fairly new in the market. This means there are not as many apps currently available to a large target audience. An app in this market has greater chances to be tried by a majority of the users. If found good, the app will easily get recognized.
What resources on Microsoft or community side you found most helpful while working on the app? Could you please take us on a quick tour to understand your application better?
The greatest part of working with Microsoft Innovation Center, Lahore was the accommodating environment. Both of us were guided and counselled individually. We could ask for help from anyone. When we got stuck, the cocos2dx forums were always accepting and there to help out.
About the game, well basically, it is set in an elementary school. The theme is to give a juvenile and fun setting. BuRsted is a water balloon fight between the kids at school. We have to hit other children with water balloons all the while trying to dodge their balloons in a limited time. There are extra characters which are in the form of allies/friends and teachers as well as extra gadgets to give help during a level. It gets harder with each level. It is a reflex-based game and can get quickly addictive. It’s not targeted to any specific audience, but is supposed to be fun for all.
What are your interests behind technology?
Technology is what makes life worth living. Everything is now so much easier. A few years ago I wouldn’t have imagined being able to make a video call to a person from a small screen! Now, it’s the norm. Technology changes things, and it changes things for the better. As a techie myself and with a crazy obsession with all things related to computers, I want to be one of the pioneers of futuristic tech that is useful for everyone.
Any plans for news apps or projects in general?
We currently have lots of projects in the pipeline. But only time can reveal these projects!
What would you advise to Developers in the region who also would like to become Pakistan Hero?
This is a very dynamic field. So if someone is testing the waters, do not be afraid to go for a swim. One creative thought is all it takes to make it big. Utilize your potential and try your best. This is the best advice I can give since this
is one which I follow personally. As long as one is focusing on innovation and quality, the results will deliver.
