Today’s featured app Daily Supplications is important because of two reasons; first because the app gracefully adheres to the principle of Modern UI and second because the developer of this app, Laraib Usman Memon (she happen to be an intern at Microsoft Innovation Center, Lahore) joined the internship program all the way from Karachi which is more than 1000 km apart.
Before Laraib was moving back to her home town Karachi to continue pursuing her further goals, we thought it would be great if she shares her experience and here’s what she had to say,
Could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I’m Laraib Usman and I am a final year student of “Bachelors in Computer Science” from National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (NUCES – FAST), Karachi. I had always been keen about software development and life for me is about exploring different platforms which would help me feed this passion and to become outstanding in my field. My acquaintance with different Microsoft Technology Platforms started during my school days and since then I have been working with it on educational as well as professional level. Daily Supplications became my first application for windows phone that I developed under the guidance of Microsoft Innovation Centre Lahore.
How the idea of the “Daily Supplications” came to you?
Well, as I was new to developing for windows phones, I wanted my first application to provide most of the features of a top app whilst catering my audience with an interactive user interface and a rich user experience. I also wanted my application to be something that reached out a large audience, wasn’t seasonal as well as helped me gain some inner satisfaction. Therefore making a religious application for daily supplications seemed to be the best choice for my first app.
Why you decided to implement this idea specifically on Windows8/Windows Phone/Azure?
I had been developing using .NET framework for quite some time now and development for phone was one field that I hadn’t explored yet. Windows Phone development came to me at a time when the OS is relatively new to users, especially in Pakistan. The app library for Windows Phones isn’t that vast either and therefore provides excellent opportunity for aspiring programmers such as myself to create, experiment, learn and have fun.
What resources on Microsoft or community side you found most helpful while working on the app? Could you please take us on a quick tour to understand your application better?
I worked with the Microsoft Innovation Center (Lahore) for my first windows phone application and it was because of their help, guidance and support that all the ingredients to making the perfect app came together. My previous experience, sessions and tutorials by MIC and the immense cooperation of my colleagues there provided a boost for me to develop on windows phone platform.

What are your interests behind technology?
I believe that technology holds the key to the success and holds the power to pull up any nation right next the world’s leading countries.
Any plans for news apps or projects in general?
I am currently working on a camera application for windows phone 8 that uses Nokia Imaging SDK to provide maximum features and effects. This application basically deals with the concept of edit before capture by rendering changes and filters directly on the live camera feed so that you can take the picture only after you are satisfied with how it looks and save yourself the burden of deleting the pics with undesired editing results. This application is currently in the final stages of development and will be published within few weeks.
What would you advise to Developers in the region who also would like to become Pakistan Hero?
To all young and upcoming programmers in Pakistan, persistence and hard work are the key, I suppose. You may have all the programming talent and sense in the world but it’s useless unless you’re willing to do your homework. Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard.
Moreover I would like to address all the girls out there that this is the time to break the stereotypical notion that girls aren’t good at with computers. It’s only a matter of dedication and believing in yourself.
