Featured App of the Day: Urgent for Windows Phone

We are back with app of the day; Urgent built by Saad Mehmood. Urgent is a utility built for task, reminder and alarms management and supports features like NFC sharing, set as lock screen, voice commands and more.

1. Could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

I am Saad Mahmood a Windows Phone developer at SeenReport.pvt.ltd, Microsoft Student Partner, and pursuing degree of BS. Software Engineering as a sophomore (4th semester) from Forman Christian College, Lahore, Pakistan. Having passion for computer science and developing for Microsoft Technologies especially Windows Phone.

2. How the idea of the Urgent came to you?

After getting knowledge of 8.0 Windows Phone SDK and its fantastic new features, some of its features appealed me and I really liked very ones. I always wanted to do something innovative for general user of windows phone. More usability more attraction and better user experience. I merged few new features of windows phone 8 so that a Windows Phone user can set its most urgent tasks by a click or a voice command. Secondly, I searched for task management applications all the applications were based on schedules but I had a better idea it was to change the user’s lock screen with the important task of user. So every time the user unlocks the screen he got reminded of that very important task. That was more amazing for me when I introduced voice commands in my application and user was able to set tasks, set appointments, record voice notes just by saying a single voice command. So it is a complete manager with some innovation and new features of SDK 8.0.

3. Why you decided to implement this idea specifically on Windows8/Windows Phone/Azure?

People use their cell phones for task management and voice notes. It is the very device majority of people pursue to have and for an application focusing on tasks, notes, recordings and messages Windows Phone was the very platform giving me ample features. So I was able to capture more audience effectively.

4. What resources on Microsoft or community side you found most helpful while working on the app? Could you please take us on a quick tour to understand your application better?

After availability of SDK 8.0 Windows Phone documentations and channel9 videos were the very important resource for me. Whereas MSDN blogs and forums played a good part to help me out.

Quick Tour:

URGET is uniquely designed as a solution of human needs by help of technology. Many of times we set a task, reminder and alarm to remind of a particular thing. But, eventually we forget it. URGENT provides a complete sleek solution to your problem. You go, compose the task by your finger and press the button to set your lock screen. Whenever you will unlock your phone you will be reminded of the very task.

  URGENT has following features

               > Secret Message

               > URGENT Task

               > Voice NOTES

               > Appointments

5. What are your interests behind technology?

I love to develop enterprise, medical, tools and useable applications for different platforms mostly for Phone, and Web. I love to make connected applications connected with server, social media etc. Producing productive applications that enhance the user’s experience and usability is my passion. My major technologies are Phone development, JSON, WebServices, WCF and Web Applications.

6. Any plans for news apps or projects in general?

Yes, I have planned to create application for medical purpose. In medical technology of Ultrasound Scanners the literacy of doctors/ Lady health workers of my country is not up to mark so they always face difficulty in imaging parts of body and are not able to scan effectively. I am planning to make an application that streams video from cell phone and specialists at a place help the doctors to scan and assist. This project will help the doctors/lady health workers in remote areas to perform diagnosis.

Secondly I am planning to make educational application for different open course wares of different universities. So a student can access his/her classes on cell phone as well as on Windows8 desktop and make use of its digital gadgets effectively.

7. What would you advise to Developers in the region who also would like to become Pakistan Hero?

I would like to suggest them that focus on innovative ideas and think out of the box for problems around them. When you stick to a thought you can do it, because most of the times things that come to one’s mind are possible. Most of the developers give up when they are very near to success, so never give up and never lose faith. As everybody know practice makes a man perfect, so practice as much as you can.
