The Freudian typo that will not die: Enchanced video quality

While wasting time doing valuable background research on my computer, I received the following suggestion:

For enchanced video quality, click here.

It's good to know that the typo that I first encountered in 1993 is still alive and kicking.

(And even though it's not important to the story, people will demand some sort of follow-up, so here it is: I submitted feedback to the vendor, who said that it was a known issue fixed in the next update.)

    It worked!

I just googled define:enchanced. It brought me to the first typo article. Eh, I guess it's just not an English word.

    I am just wondering:

    1) What kind of valuable background research would suggest you that?

    2) How could I forget what means "oHg5SJYRHA0"?

    .-.

  4. Eric Fournier says:

"Enchanced" might also be a typo of enchanted. I'd pay for enchanted meta-files.

  5. Evan says:

They should have paid attention to the referer of such an important bug.

  6. alegr1 says:

In one of our driver's release notes, I see "enchantments" pretty often.

  7. Forrest WMP says:

They say enchanced video quality is like a box of chocolates

  8. Nick says:

The worst part about that Rickroll video is that you lose the game each time you see it.

    The Game.

    :P

  9. Jolyon Smith says:

I still don't see what is Freudian about this slip…

A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but you mean your mother.

  10. cheong00 says:

@Jolyon: That's nice example of Freudian slip. (I'd have commentted there if comment on that page is not disabled… :P )

  11. JustSomeGuy says:

Joylon, you stuffed it up. It's meant to be "you mean a mother" (rhymes with "another"), not "your mother" (which rhymes with roughly nothing).

  12. alexx says:

That's it, I'm adding this to my Spam Filter Word List.

  13. phil says:

Popular typo. Google "define: enchanced". Not just the referenced article but other, unrelated stuff too.

  14. Jolyon says:

@JustSomeGuy… no, *you* stuffed it up.  A Freudian slip doesn't have to rhyme, but it does typically involve a fixation on the influence of someone's mother on them – "you say one thing … mean your mother".

"a mother" is indefinite and non-specific.  It is not Freudian.

Jacksonian, maybe (as in Samuel L), but not Freudian.  :)

Oh, and to add insult to injury… you will see from the example spelling clearly provided, that my name is JoLYon not JoYLon.  ;)

  15. Evan says:

Google and Bing both agree with Jolyon. Take Bing's results:

"you say one thing but mean a mother": 38 results

"you say one thing but mean your mother": 5,770 results

Google is similarly unbalanced (2,630 vs 572,000).

  16. badabing says:

    That's because bing is google-powered.

  17. mike says:

I've been mistyping "template" as "tempalte" at least since 1985. It's a hazard of a) working with products that all seem to have templates and b) having fat fingers.
