“This whitepaper is based on a lot of hard work, dedication and collaboration from a lot of exceptional individuals; it documents the architectural design considerations and performance characteristics of a real-world, large-scale SharePoint lab implementation containing 50+ million content items, and reflects both “scale-up” and “scale-out” scenarios.

The hardware rig was provided by Fujitsu, complete with Blade servers, Rack servers, and an Itanium SQL server on the back-end, with a full 10TB of storage space on a Fujitsu Eternus 4000 SAN.

Then came our MS-Gold Partner, KnowledgeLake, who was responsible for blasting 50 million content items into SharePoint; they also played a key role in defining the architecture, creating and executing the system tests and gathering the massive results. KnowlegeLake was ultimately able to use their load tool to send 50 million documents into SharePoint at a peak rate of 7+ MILLION documents PER DAY!

I’m confident that we’ve finally answered the looming question, “Can SharePoint scale?”, with a resounding YES!!

The purpose of this white paper is to provide prescriptive guidance for implementing Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 in a real-world, large-scale enterprise content storage scenario that is based on an actual implementation of customer requirements. It is intended to provide strategic information relating to architecting a high-volume, high-availability enterprise solution that will easily provide for and accommodate both "scale-up" and "scale-out" scenarios to meet long-term objectives in the enterprise.

This document does not replace professional design work. We recommend that for large deployments, expert opinion is sought to ensure that up-to-date best practices are being utilized and customer requirements are fully met.
