System Center Virtual Machine Manager released to RTM

As described on EDGE, System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) released to manufacture(RTM) this week which is going to be another huge step for making Virtualization more common place in the enterprise.

One of the key issues that ITPROs told us, was there was no really great solution for managing the potentially 1000's of virtual servers in the environment. SCVMM solves this problem, with an integrated, multi-vendor solution to manage your virtual environments, including Virtual Server, Hyper-V and VMware ESX.

SCVMM 2008 also includes a new feature, "Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO)" which enables customers to dynamically manage the performance of their virtual hosts and guests.

Key things to be aware of

  1. Manages Hyper-V, including Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and the new Hyper-V Server 2008
  2. Manages VMWare – if you can do it in the VMWare console, you can do it in SCVMM
  3. Cluster support, Delegated Administration and resource optimization with PRO
  4. Conversion tools to automatically migration from VMWARE images to Windows VHD formats.
