Top Things to Break Applications on Windows Server 2008

ws08_logo_heroWe are getting pretty close to shipping Windows Server 2008. If you have not done already, please download the latest build of Windows Server 2008 (see recent post of download instructions ) and test the applications which you have developed.

If your application does not work, there are lots of great resources that we have built to help you understand what's wrong and what you can do to fix the problems.

Below is a list of the top resources which I point developers to. At the bottom of the list, there is an offer of Lab space with our experts on the subject at no charge too.

Application Compatibility Cookbook - This defines 37 areas where your application could break. A pointer to the main page can be found here. One note is that you might think that this is defined for Vista, but this is not. There has been a major rev for Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility and Certification Forum - This provides you with a good connection with the people based on the Windows product team who are supporting App Compat issues today. You can find the forum at the following location ( https://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1850&SiteID=1)

.NET 3.5 Framework - Windows Server 2008 will ship with the .NET 3.0 Framework as an installable component as part of the Application Platform role. Applications which are developed for the .NET 3.5 framework will have to install .NET 3.5 framework as a downloadable component from the web.

Light Up Features - As a developer, why should you bother? Always a good question. Here are the Top 7 Things that Light up Windows Server https://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb852230.aspx from Jason in my team.
