Update to PowerBI content package for Dynamics NAV

We have updated our PowerBI content package for Dynamics NAV. The following list outlines the changes:

  1. Data issues for the NA and GB versions
    The NA and GB versions currently have issues due to special code on web services and the use of accounting periods. The fix was provided with Dynamics 2016 Cumulative Update 2.
  2. No finance data in Dynamics NAV demo data
    The standard demo data in Dynamics NAV is based on a future date currently with dates in 2016 and 2017. But when we extract data for PowerBI, we use the calendar data for the Finance reports, and as a result, you won’t get any finance data when running on a standard Dynamics NAV demonstration database. The Sales report will not have date filters applied.

To avoid having empty finance charts, we’ve decided to remove the filters in the finance reports from the package. An updated package will be available in a week or two. We will update this blog post when the updated package is available.

Unfiltered finance data is a bit unusual, and this will obviously result in some not-so-pretty charts for finance when you run on demo data, but at least they are not empty. Obviously you want to filter data when your running on real life production instances.

If, in the meantime, you want to achieve the same result with the current package, you must deploy the current PowerBI content package for Dynamics NAV, and then modify the dashboard as described here:

  1. Go to the Finance report and select Edit Report.
  2. Select the date slicer and remove the filter (the little eraser icon).
  3. Check each chart by selecting it and check the filter in the right side.
  4. Pin each of the four charts to the dashboard, and save the page.
  5. On the dashboard, replace the existing four finance charts:
    1. Edit the titles, so they match the corresponding existing charts.
    2. Resize the new charts so they match the corresponding existing charts.
    3. Remove the four old charts.
    4. Re-position the new charts so they’re placed where the old ones were.
