As I have mentioned in several of my recent posts, such as Simplifying your Microsoft Partner Network Portal Experience, we are constantly working to enhance the experience of our customers and partners to make it easier to do business with Microsoft and to simplify your access to resources and benefits from Microsoft. This weekend, the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center will be adding several new features to further enhance the experience for our customers and partners around the world who utilize the Microsoft Volume Licensing programs to acquire their Microsoft technologies.
Some of you may recall the update we made back in April to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center that included the addition of the “Add Open License” functionality. The “Add Open License” functionality provided a way for Microsoft partners to more easily manage Open Licenses on behalf of their customers by becoming Non-Administrator Users on the Open Licenses their clients wanted them to help manage. Since then, we have been receiving great feedback on the “Add Open License” feature, but one statement I’ve heard a few times from partners goes something like this, “I love the Add Open License feature, but it would be great if we could automatically get added to Open License agreements we sell right up front so we wouldn’t even need “Add Open License” anymore.” Great feedback! Guess what? Now you will have it!
One of the enhancements we are brining to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center this weekend is Reseller auto-provisioning. Through reseller auto-provisioning, when a reseller supplies their email address to their Distributor as the “Reseller Email” on the Open License order, (which they should be doing on every order already) that email address will be auto-provisioned in the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center as a Non-Administrative User (just like Add Open License does today, but without having to go through the Add Open License process). A couple things to note here, for clarity and to address some questions:
- Be sure you are supplying the customer information as the customer information and the reseller information as the reseller information. I know, it sounds really obvious and simple, but I’ve seen people mix it up before. Two really important reasons are:
- To make sure the customer actually has licenses for the software they purchased. See my Be sure the customer’s name is on the agreement post for more information on this and why it is so important.
- It is the Reseller Email that will be auto-provisioned in the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center, so you want to make sure your email (make sure it is the business email address you have linked to your Live ID for VLSC access) as the reseller is there; otherwise, it will not be auto-provisioned
- Before anyone replies back, “but as the reseller, we need to be Administrators on the agreements,” take a look at my Partners, why you don’t need to be an Administrator in VLSC post because the fact is, you can actually manage your client’s licenses without needing to be an Administrator.
In the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center we provide a couple of views called the License Summary and the Relationship Summary to provide quick summary information to you about your licenses and agreements in the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center.
- License Summary: Provides quick summary of the licenses you own, with versions, quantities of each, and active Software Assurance quantities across all of your active and inactive Licensing IDs (agreements).
- Relationship Summary: Provides a quick summary of all of the Licensing IDs (agreements) that you are authorized to view and or manage and includes: Licensing ID, number of orders on that Licensing ID, Organization Name, Organization City & Country, Licensing ID End Date, Status, Parent Licensing Program, and MSBA (if applicable)
One piece of feedback we have heard from customers and partners on these summaries is, “The (License/Relationship) summary is very helpful and provides a nice overview; however, it would be really helpful if we could have access to this information offline instead of having to always log into the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center to see it.” Ok, you’ve got it! Another enhancement that we are bringing to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center this weekend is Offline access. Through offline access, you will be able to download a CSV file from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center that includes the information from your License Summary and Relationship Summary that you can view and use offline whenever you choose.
Ever since the “Add Open License” feature was added to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center, a standard practice that happens is that the customer receives a notification email letting them know that their reseller is being added to their agreement and how to deny that request if they choose to, for instance, if the client wants to manage their agreements all by themselves. One of the pieces of feedback that we have heard is, “The ability for our reseller to be added to our agreements to manage them for us is great and makes things much easier. It would also be very helpful if when we receive the notification of them being added, we had the ability to ‘click to deny’,’ in the event we want to be the ones to manage our own agreements by ourselves instead of having to go into the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center site to deny it.” Ok, you’ve got it!
Another of the enhancements coming to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center this weekend is the “One-click denial” feature that will be included in the notification emails. Now when the customer receives the notification email about anyone being added to their agreement through “Add Open License” or “Auto-provisioning,” there will be a sentence right in the email that states: “If you wish to deny this access, please click here: [LINK]” and clicking on the link will automatically process the denial without the customer having to go and log into the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center.
Here is something for you to take note of: as I have mentioned several times above, we will be bringing these new enhancements to the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center this weekend. As such, the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center will be unavailable while we make these updates to the site, which means you will not be able to access the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center from 5:00 PM PST November 12th to 5:00pm PST November 14th. As such, if you anticipate needing information from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center at some point over the weekend, please go there prior to 5:00 PM PST on November 12th and get the information ahead of time so that you have it available to you over the weekend while we make the new enhancements to the site.
