How do we get the Up-to-date (UTD) discount on one or more components of the Small Business Desktop Suite if we own qualifying licenses for those components but want to order the full suite?

This question is one that I presented on back in my Introduction to Open Value Subscription for Partners Live Meetings I was conducting back in January and February. Now that Open Value Subscription has launched here in the US and more and more Partners are starting to take advantage of all that it offers, I am starting to see this question coming up more and more often as well. Based on that, here are the answers to this question, along with the Part numbers you need:

To get the Up-to-date discount on one or more of the individual components of one of the Small Business Desktop Suite, you simply order the three individual components (with or without the Up-to-date discount depending on what they qualify for) as part of the suite, instead of just the single suite part number.

For the Small Business Desktop (which includes: Windows Vista Business Upgrade, Office Small Business, and SBS CAL), if you want to get the UTD discount on some components, you would order:

  • Qty. 1 of Part # 66J-01681 – Windows Vista Business Upgrade SB Desktop @ $67 ERP each for every desktop that does not qualify for the UTD pricing on the Windows Vista Business Upgrade
  • Qty. 1 of Part # 66J-02450 – Windows Vista Business Upgrade UTD SB Desktop @ $34 ERP each for every desktop that does qualify for the UTD pricing on the Windows Vista Business Upgrade

NOTE: These two quantities added together must equal the total number of qualified desktops in the company

  • Qty. 1 of Part # T74-02852 (User CAL) or T74-02848 (Device CAL) – Windows Small Business Server CAL SB Desktop @ $29 ERP each for every desktop that does not qualify for the UTD pricing on the Windows Small Business Server CAL
  • Qty. 1 of Part # T74-02682 (User CAL) or T74-02618 (Device CAL) – Windows Small Business Server CAL UTD SB Desktop @ $14 ERP each for every desktop that does qualify for the UTD pricing on the Windows Small Business Server CAL

NOTE: These two quantities added together must equal the total number of qualified desktops in the company

  • Qty. 1 of Part # W87-00717 – Office Small Business SB Desktop @ $146 ERP each for every desktop that does not qualify for the UTD pricing on Office Small Business
  • Qty. 1 of Part # W87-00562– Office Small Business UTD SB Desktop @ $73 ERP each for every desktop that does qualify for the UTD pricing on Office Small Business

NOTE: These two quantities added together must equal the total number of qualified desktops in the company

Remember that you must order all three components of the Small Business Desktop Suite (Windows Upgrade, SBS CAL, and Office Small Business) if you want to take advantage of the Small Business Desktop savings. You cannot order just one component of the suite without the others.

Here’s an example. Let’s say you have a 35 PC company that owns 20 Windows XP Pro OEM licenses, 15 Windows 2000 Pro OEM licenses, 20 Office Small Business 2003 OEM licenses, 15 Office 2000 OEM licenses and no SBS CALs and they want to purchase the Small Business Desktop for their company through Open Value Subscription and utilize User CALs for their SBS CALs. Your order for them would be:

  • Qty. 20 of Part # 66J-02450 – Windows Vista Business Upgrade UTD SB Desktop @ $34 ERP each since the 20 Windows XP Pro OEM licenses qualify for the UTD discount for the Windows Vista Business Upgrade
  • Qty. 15 of Part # 66J-01681 – Windows Vista Business Upgrade SB Desktop @ $67 ERP each since the 15 Windows 2000 Pro OEM licenses do not qualify for the UTD discount for the Windows Vista Business Upgrade
  • Qty. 20 of Part # W87-00562– Office Small Business UTD SB Desktop @ $73 ERP each since the 20 Office Small Business 2003 OEM licenses qualify for the UTD discount for Office Small Business
  • Qty. 15 of Part # W87-00717 – Office Small Business SB Desktop @ $146 ERP each since the 15 Office 2000 OEM licenses do not qualify for the UTD discount for Office Small Business
  • Qty. 35 of Part # T74-02852 Windows Small Business Server User CAL SB Desktop @ $29 ERP each since they have no qualifying licenses for the UTD discount for SBS CALs

As you can see, the above order includes Qty. 35 for all three components of the Small Business Desktop (Office Small Business, Windows Vista Business Upgrade, and SBS CALs) since there are 35 computers in the client’s organization and they mixed and matched the UTD and non-UTD SKUs for each component based on what they qualified for the UTD discount on.

For the Year 2 and Year 3 orders, since the UTD discount only applies in Year 1, they Year 2 and Year 3 orders would include the non-UTD Part #s only, so it would look like:

  • Qty. 35 of Part # 66J-01681 – Windows Vista Business Upgrade SB Desktop @ $67 ERP each
  • Qty. 35 of Part # W87-00717 – Office Small Business SB Desktop @ $146 ERP each
  • Qty. 35 of Part # T74-02852 Windows Small Business Server User CAL SB Desktop @ $29 ERP each

If the client above did not have any qualifying licenses for the UTD discount on any of the components originally, then they could have simply placed an order for Qty. 35 of Part # B6K-00055 which is the Small Business Desktop Suite as a single license instead of breaking out the individual components as they did above to get the UTD discount on the components.

I hope this helps clear up any questions on how and what you would order for your clients looking to take advantage of the Small Business Desktop in addition to taking advantage of the UTD discount on the various components of the suite based on existing licenses through Open Value Subscription.

UPDATE: As of October, 2008, platform options (such as the Small Business Desktop Advantage) are now handled through the “Build Your Own Platform” model. Here is the post that explains this new option for you.
