Microsoft Small Business Server – Several server applications, one license, all on one box.

I saw a few questions floating around over the weekend regarding Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 and wanting to install the server components on multiple machines. Remember that just like Microsoft Office, SBS is a suite of products included in a single license. This license allows for the installation of those products onto a single device, not multiple.

So just like you cannot purchase a license of Microsoft Office and install Microsoft Word on one PC, Microsoft Excel on another PC, etc., the same holds true for SBS. If you purchase SBS Standard, you can install the Microsoft Windows Server Standard and Exchange Server Standard components included in SBS on a single server. If you purchase SBS Premium, you can install the Microsoft Windows Server Standard, Exchange Server Standard, SQL Server Workgroup Edition, and ISA Server components included in SBS on a single server. You cannot split the components and install them on multiple systems. If you have an SBS 2003 R2 Server license, you could use your SBS Extended CAL rights to access other server licenses you purchase for inclusion in the SBS domain.
