How do I get Office Pro for my Small Business Desktops (fka Platform SKU) instead of Office Small Business Edition?
UPDATE: As of October, 2008, platform options (such as the Small Business Desktop Advantage) are now handled through the “Build Your Own Platform” model. Here is the post that explains this new option for you.

By now, you’ve probably seen that the Small Business Desktop (fka Platform SKU) is a Company-wide agreement offered through Microsoft’s Open Value licensing program that provides every computer in the client’s company with:
1) Office Small Business Edition License + 3 years of Software Assurance
2) Small Business Server Client Access License (CAL) + 3 Years of Software Assurance
3) Windows XP Professional Upgrade + 3 Years of Software Assurance
So, what happens if your customer wants Office Professional instead of Office Small Business Edition on some or all of their computers? It’s actually quite straight forward. We offer an option called a Microsoft Office Professional Step-Up which converts the Office Small Business Edition with Software Assurance to an Office Professional License with Software Assurance. The Office Professional Step-up can be done either on a one-by-one or a Company-wide basis. So, let’s take a look at an example:
Example #1: Let’s say your client has 12 PCs and wants to get the Microsoft Small Business Desktop for their company but they want Office Pro on 5 of their PCs instead of Office Small Business Edition. Here’s what you would need:
- First, you would order (12) Microsoft Small Business Desktop licenses:
o Part # B6K-00052 if not using Microsoft Financing (to use the spread payments of Open Value)
o Part # B6K-00050 if using Microsoft Financing to spread the payments or if customer wants to pay the full 3 years up-front
- Next, order (5) Office Professional Step-Ups from Office SBE on the same order:
o Part # 269-09052 if not using Microsoft Financing (to use the spread payments of Open Value)
o Part # 269-09060 if using Microsoft Financing to spread the payments or if customer wants to pay the full 3 years up-front
That’s it! The client now has the Microsoft Small Business Desktop for all PCs in the company and (5) of the PCs have Office Pro instead of Office SBE.
Example #2: Let’s say your client has 12 PCs and wants to get the Microsoft Small Business Desktop for their company but they want Office Pro on all of their PCs instead of Office Small Business Edition. Here’s what you would need:
- First, you would order (12) Microsoft Small Business Desktop licenses:
o Part # B6K-00052 if not using Microsoft Financing (to use the spread payments of Open Value)
o Part # B6K-00050 if using Microsoft Financing to spread the payments or if customer wants to pay the full 3 years up-front
- Next, order (12) Office Professional Company-wide Step-Ups from Office SBE (one per PC) on the same order:
o Part # 269-09721 if not using Microsoft Financing (to use the spread payments of Open Value)
o Part # 269-09725 if using Microsoft Financing to spread the payments or if customer wants to pay the full 3 years up-front
That’s it! The client now has the Microsoft Small Business Desktop for all PCs in the company and all (12) of the PCs have Office Pro instead of Office SBE.
