What’s with the Racoons ?

At approximately 1am today I was woken up by what sounded like someone having a party on the roof of the house (quickly checking my schedule on my Pocket PC and SPOT watch I certainly hadn’t setup a party) – there was the sound of footsteps running up and down, and something banging on the roof.

I stepped outside and used a torch (flashlight) to shine onto the roof, there was a Racoon trying to remove portions of the roof – sure these critters look cute, but not at 1am with parts of my roof in it’s mouth – after an appropriate amount of arm waving, shouting and shining the torch into it’s face it ran away… Just wondering whether it’s going to be back again tonight…

Do you have a chimney?  If so, you might want to worry at least a little bit about the notion that the critter’s attempting to gain entry through there.

I had an experience similar to yours wherein a racoon actually knocked a brick loose from the top of my chimney which proceeded to bounce down the roof of my house at a similar hour of the night.

Ultimately, the little guy never came back for me, but I heard various solutions such as placing a small pot of ammonia inside the fireplace to allow the aroma (which they hate) to waft out the opening.
