Windows XP Embedded – Change the boot screen.

This is a pretty common question on the newsgroups, and also came up on e-mail this morning – how do you change the Windows XP Embedded boot screen/logo ?

From Sysinternals.com – modify your boot.ini as follows.

/BOOTLOGO
Use this switch to have Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 display an installable splash screen instead of the standard splash screen. First, create a 16-color (any 16 colors) 640×480 bitmap and save it in the Windows directory with the name Boot.bmp. Then add “/bootlogo /noguiboot” to the boot.ini selection.

There are a ton of other boot.ini flags listed on the Sysinternals site.

And this does not conflict with any of the XP Embedded legal agreements?

now that’s an entirely different question (a good question though).

I will go check with the Windows XP Embedded product manager and report back.

As far as I remember from the license, you can remove the WinXP boot screen, but you can’t (or shoudln’t to be exact) put anything else there…

What if you’re using HORM? There need to be a way to at least surpress the "resuming" screen…

The Windows XP Embedded license agreement would appear to allow two options for boot screen.

    1. use the Windows XP Embedded boot screen "as is"

    2. Replace the Windows XP Embedded boot screen with your own boot screen.

Of course you should read the license agreement for yourself ! :O)
