NOC, NOC… Who’s there ? (Slience)…

Yesterday I mentioned that there had been an outage on RIM’s mail service – this doesn’t seem to be an isolated incident, interestingly I don’t see anything on the RIM web site about the outage, there are of course reports from 3rd party sites, including this site from June 23rd – the page has an interesting quote…

Closed systems have more growing pains than open ones: BlackBerry is a great device BUT on a closed, proprietary network. If RIM’s Waterloo NOC “goes down,” then all three million BlackBerry subscribers are touched in some way. There is no alternative or back-up for BlackBerries.

Wouldn’t you much rather have full control over your mobile e-mail experience ? – If you’re running exchange server 2003 in-house then you should take a look at the SP2 update (coming soon)

Sounds like an argument for redundancy in the RIM network to me, rather than for a completely different solution 🙂
