What is a Platform ?

    I’ve always thought of an Embedded platform as the components, the binaries, the tools. Basically everything required to allow an OEM developer to deliver their unique solution.

    It’s actually a good question because it’s a term used loosely and means different things to different people.

    As an eMbedded software developer, I see the platform as a combination of a Spec., an OS and the underlying CPU hardware. For example, Pocket PC Platform: I see it as the Microsoft Pocket PC Spec. + WinCE OS + eMbedded CPU hardware (xARM, XScale, etc.). That is the most complete definition that I can come up with so far…
