XBOX Live over 802.11g

Last night I decided to setup an 802.11g network at home so that we could remote my son and his XBOX from the main family room to the kids play room – the plan is to also use the newly connected 802.11g XBOX to remote the Media Center UI – I already have Comcast high speed internet access which uplinks into a Microsoft MN-700 residential gateway, this has been running for several months without needing to be touched and has been providing 802.11b wireless support to various PC’s and laptops around the house.

I’ve added a second MN-700 residential gateway which now adds support for 802.11g (I thought that 802.11g and 802.11b devices would both be able to connect to an 802.11g gateway, but that doesn’t appear to be the case, hence the need to add a second gateway).

AirPlus Xtreme G High Speed 2.4GHz Wireless 108Mbps Gaming Adapter, 802.11g, bI’ve added the D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G High Speed 2.4GHz Wireless Gaming Adapter (see the image on the right) to the XBOX, configuration of the unit was over a wired networking connection from my laptop – this was pretty quick and simple, configuring the security settings and SSID for the 802.11g network.

Performance of the 802.11g netork seems to be absolutely fine for playing Halo2 live, I've not seen any game lag in UI or voice - so far, so good.

The good news about remoting the Media Center UI is that we can see which channel the set top box is currently set to, and, we can see the wireless activity on the MN-700, so know when the squiddly-winks are playing Halo2 online

The next plan is to hook up an MSN TV2 box to the TV set and see how the family takes to using this for web browsing and e-mail – stay tuned…
