The future is arriving, one robot at a time…

Think I Reboot Robot is just fiction ? – think again, robotic vaccum cleaners, robotic lawn mowers, robotic surgery and vehicle manufacture, all this is here now – the future will just see more robots – they will soon be as common as the iPod Portable Media Center – report is here

Robotic surgery doesn’t mean robots are the ones in charge – it’s just a human operating a dubm robot, AFAIK. Vehicle manufacturing (and any other manufacturing) are just preprogrammed machines, again, they’re not making any decisions on their own. So far I’m not aware of a robot with AI, one that can make its own decisions. One that can figure out where your lawn ends without the need for a wire marker.

There are some interesting devices shipping in Japan, take the Maron-1 for example – this can be pre-programmed with the dimensions of a building and then "walk" around looking for ‘trouble’.

or Aibo – http://www.us.aibo.com/ – who will return to it’s power pad when it needs to recharge.

This is still the first step, devices will get smarter – it’s just a matter of time.

AI means many different things to different people. I have a Parallax Toddler that avoids walls by touch and IR senses — is it AI? Is it not deciding autonomously when to turn, without my intervention? Or is it just a bunch of BASIC I downloaded off the CD? "Any sufficiently advanced technology

is indistinguishable from magic" — Arthur C. Clarke. Robots have been under steady development for years — and interesting applications are in high street stores today, with and without assistance from wires. Watch for more to come! Many interesting things are happening in robotics. See you at http://www.robonexus.com perhaps?
