Updating Icons Part 1 – The Basics

So after yesterday’s post, somebody asked how to update an Icon in CRM. Since it is a little hidden, here are some step by steps on how to do it.

1. Select / Settings / Customizations/ Customize Entities

2. Select the Entity and select More Actions and the click Update Icons. Click browse to browse to where your icons are located.  Select your Icon and click Open,

You should now have a screen that looks like this.

Click Ok.

Publish your customizations. You should now have your custom icon with a new Icon that doesn’t look as lame. 🙂

Now the cool thing about this, once you add the icon and you export your XML, the icon’s are embedded in your XML file, so they will go with the customizations. Which you can read more about here.

Can you update the icons for existing entities? We renamed our Account entity "Policyholder" and it would be nice to reflect that in the icon but CRM does not permit updates to installed icons.

I tested that as well and it appears that updating system icons is not supported. I am not even sure of a hack…

It keep sgiving me an error on the SFO upload.  Saying it needs to be a .ICO.  I just renamed the .gif extensions to .ico.  Do I need to do more?

Can someone explain where in Outlook do the custom icons (aka "Shortcut Icon") appear?  I was hoping they would appear in the "Microsoft CRM" hierarchy on the left, but all still appear as yellow folder icons.
