I don't understand why it is taking so long to get these out.

R2 has been released for almost 2 years. The exams have been updated and out for almost 9 months… Students are studying the wrong materials and it's unfair. Microsoft needs to do a better job telling the left hand what the right hand is doing. I have seen too many people give up on these certs because there isn't any study information out there. (Any of the 'Right' kind anyway)

  2. Richard K. says:

I also agree with Tammie. Its a shame that it took so long.

    Next time:

    1. New Books

    2. New Questions

  3. Robert brown says:

    Hi Kim,

I have my MCSE 2003 and was going to do the 70-649 upgrade exam, your article does not mention if that book is to be upgraded to Win2k8R2… Do you know if/when this will happen?

  4. Robert brown says:

Or even "Thanks", clearly I am not a touch typist.

  5. Boris says:

Just passed 70-649, and was really stressed by a lot of R2 specific questions. So, maybe second edition of 70-648/649 would be nice, if you not going to forward MCSEs to full track instead of upgade.

  6. Packetboy says:

Ahh im pretty sure 70-640 2nd edition is already available…

  7. Craig Roberts for says:

for Australian customers visit you can pre order.

    70-642 2/e is out now.

  8. KimSpilker says:

Robert – We won't be publishing a new edition of the 70-648/649 Training Kit. The sales from the 1st edition were not enough for us to publish a 2nd edition.

  9. That just isn't right! says:

As a MSCE2003/security I'm very very disappointed in Microsoft especially with that last post by KimSpilker that there is NOT be a 70-649 2nd edition press release! I've been waiting 3 months for the 2nd edition to catch up! What the h***?  You are now forcing us to buy 3 books instead of one?  What a fricken rip off!  I'm ready to trash all my certifications! They have no value on a resume and no one hires if you do have them! (13 total).  Take this as a huge complaint!

"Robert – We won't be publishing a new edition of the 70-648/649 Training Kit. The sales from the 1st edition were not enough for us to publish a 2nd edition."

Shame on you Microsoft – it’s always about the $$ and not looking after certified candidates that have spent and invested thousands of hours and dollars on obtaining their certifications. If you're updating the 70-648 70-649 exams to R2 content then at least have the decency and respect to provide updated material for previously certified candidates to carry their credentials forward.  It’s great to see that you’re looking after the guys that have pushed your server software products for so many years – NOT!!

  11. Killer B says:

Although I'm normally not a big complainer about stuff like this, I have to agree with the sentiments of those that have posted here.

I failed the 70-649 TWICE because of those R2 questions!!!

Luckily, I've messed around with R2 enough a year later to pass this thing on the third try…

It's pretty bad that Microsoft markets Windows NT Client 6.1 (Win7) as a brand new operating system, while NT Server 6.1 (2008 R2) is "just an upgrade."  Make up your minds!

In any case, had supplement material for R2 been available in some form for the 70-648/649 MS Press (even a free PDF or something!), this wouldn't be such an issue!

Otherwise, you'll see people justify the practice of cheating/using braindumps, and that's the last thing a certification track with already diminishing value needs!

  12. Frank says:

I agree, it is utterly disgraceful that the exams are released before materials are available for them.  The books aren't cheap, the exams aren't cheap and the price has gone up recently.

I've also been unable to pass 70-649 because of the changes, the 70-643 section is almost entirely comprised of questions on Remote Desktop Services which is completely changed from the 70-649 upgrade book that talks about Terminal Services.
