New book: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Internals

One of the highlights of working at Microsoft Press is getting hot-off-the-press copies of our latest books. I just received delivery of Kalen Delaney’s newest title – Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Internals (ISBN: 978-0735626249), and it’s like Christmas in March around here.

For SQL Server 2008, Kalen took all the best information on SQL Server internals from her previous Inside series books – Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: The Storage Engine and Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2005: Query Optimization and Tuning -- and updated for the SQL 2008 release, plus added more on the inner workings of the technology. Kalen is a master author and instructor, and no one explains it better. The book also includes chapters and contributions from expert authors and insiders Paul S. Randal, Kimberly L. Tripp, Conor Cunningham, Adam Machanic, and Ben Nevarez.

But no need to take our word for it. The book’s foreword is written by David Campbell, a Microsoft Technical Fellow, who gives the book perhaps the highest praise any technical book can have. It’s on the shelves of and referenced by many of the very same people who developed the product.

By the way, there are only 23 Microsoft Technical Fellows in the entire world. So it’s quite an honor to have David bless Kalen’s book. When I mention David and the Technical Fellows title to friends and colleagues, most wonder about the somewhat gender-specific terminology. As one person cleverly put it, “are all the Technical Fellows fellows?” Yes, they are. But we’re lobbying to add a few women to the Fellowship.
