    I know this "experiment" sounds daft but it’s not completely idiotic. The technique of getting people to do something by first having them write down an ultimate goal is a known psychological persuasion technique. Amway use it for instance, as do many weight loss programs.

    Fundamentally people tend to act to be consistent with their previous public actions. If you have announced to your co-workers that you are going to bicycle to work every other day then you are far more likely to follow through than if you don’t make the public commitment.

    Consistency is one of the five principles that Robert Cialdini explores in his book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. I highly recommend reading it. I’ve used his principles to good effect in a bunch of technical arguments.
