Microsoft Solutions Framework Fun

I remember reading all the MSF content around 98-99, and thinking "this is super-cool stuff - it's amazing they're giving this away for free." At about the same time, the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) were also in vogue. Both were waaay overengineered for the small software shop I worked back then - a team of 3-5 developers working on a variety of projects. MSF was able to scale down for us just fine, and we took the bits and pieces that helped us get our work done better. We also took a look at some of the practices suggested in The Unified Software Development Process, but McConnell is still the king of the hill in my book.

In any case, it's good to see the good ol' MSF revved up. As usual, all the guidance goodness is there for free downloading.

For those of you who want to improve the way things work at work, I'd encouarge you to go through the MSF stuff. Just remember that processes are supposed to work for you and you should adapt them to fit your environment - ignoring this is just setting yourself up for pain.

Have a great weekend, y'all.
