Pre-order your Kinect for Windows v2 sensor starting today

At BUILD in April, we told the world that the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor and SDK would be coming this summer, and with them, the ability for developers to start creating Windows Store apps with Kinect for the first time. Well here in Redmond, Washington, it’s not summer yet. But today we are pleased to announce that developers can pre-order the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor. Developers who take advantage of this pre-order option will be able to start building solutions ahead of the general public.

Sensors purchased during the pre-order phase will be shipped in July, at which time we will also release a public beta of our software development kit (SDK). All of this will happen a few months ahead of general availability of sensors and the SDK, giving pre-order customers a head start on using the v2 sensor’s new and improved features, including increased depth-sensing capabilities, full 1080p video, improved skeletal tracking, and enhanced infrared technology.

Kinect for Windows v2 sensor

Thousands of developers wanted to take part in our Developer Preview program but were unable to do so—in fact, we’re still receiving requests from all around the world. So for these and other developers who are eager to start using the Kinect for Windows v2, the pre-order option offers access to the new sensor ahead of general availability. Bear in mind, however, that we have limited quantities of pre-order sensors, so order while supplies last.

The v2 sensors will also be shipped in July to those who participated in the Developer Preview program. For these early adopters, it’s been an amazing six months: we’ve seen more stunning designs, promising prototypes, and early apps than we can count—from finger tracking to touch-free controls for assembly line workers to tools for monitoring the environment. At BUILD, we showed you what Reflexion Health and Freak’n Genius were able to achieve with the v2 sensor in just a matter of weeks. And in July, when the sensor and SDK are more broadly available, we can only imagine what’s next.

Kinect for Windows will continue to feature more innovative uses of the v2 technology on this blog in the coming months. As Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Chief Evangelist Steven Guggenheimer notes, “I love what the Kinect sensor and SDK can do. Getting the v2 sensor into the hands of more developers and getting the SDK more widely available is the next step.”

We are committed to a future where humans and technology can interact more seamlessly—in the living room, on their PCs, and beyond.

Any chance that we will FINALLY get a Xbox One Kinect Extention cable ? I have a DAY ONE Xbox one with the Kinect still sitting in the box because I have been waiting for you to release a cable that can extend it. I can see a month or 2 but, 6 months with out even a option ? Not even a 3rd party option ?

For people with home theaters, your option to redesign your room to put the xbox one closer to the TV is more of a INSULT than anything else. What about people who have projectors ? How about people who have their TVs over a fireplace and like to keep wires hidden….

    Hello Dave,

For Xbox related questions, please visit the Xbox support page…/default.aspx

  3. TheCoolDave says:

Thanks for the reply but, that does not help, No one helps there with this subject, they just tell us to "change our room around". Can you answer one question for me, If I go spend $200 on this item, will this Kinect plug in and work on the Xbox one with a USB 3.0 cable ? Or can I just use the amplifer part to extend my current Kinect ?

Can SOMEONE PLEASE help in this area ?….6 months not one word from ANYONE with about 50 requests so far… Free free to contact me directly if you do not want to answer this question in public…

    Hi K4W-Team,

    these are great news! 🙂

Does this also mean, the Developer Preview program will end in July or will the program proceed until the general public relaease of the K4Wv2 sensor?

  6. Jakov Dužević says:

I'm glad to see that we'll finally get an opportunity to test our ideas. Developers Preview program was not helpful at all in getting the hardware to our lab. I hope something changes in the future in their decision making process. Other companies show a great deal of interest in sending us their devices, unlike Microsoft Kinect team. Still waiting in line  with other customers. :/

  7. RyWalters says:

I second TCD's comments. Please someone tell us we're getting an extension cable for Kinect for Xbox One!

  8. Heresy says:

When will release in other country?

It looks it is not variable in Taiwan.

  9. Kinect for Windows Team says:

    Hello Heresy,

We are always exploring new markets and evaluating existing ones to ensure that we have the right investment strategy worldwide.

Similar to the first Kinect for Windows sensor which was released in around a dozen countries and rolled out into additional markets over the course of the year, Kinect for Windows v2 will also be launched in a similar manner in several countries this summer and will be rolled out over time.

Thank you for the great question.

  10. Dragos-Florin Stanculescu says:

It is okay if we order it from Romania? May we place an order on let's say  Germany Store and have it delivered to Romania , and will we have access to the SDK? (It is still within EU).

  11. Kellen says:

I was impressed with the booth at BUILD (ms open tech one).  Looking forward to testing some ideas with the hardware.  Thanks for the early access!

  12. Rasmus says:

    Thats great news!

Does this also mean that from July we can officially use the Kinect2 for commercial projects?

Or will there be restrictions until public release?

I am currently working on an big information terminal and need to plan which Kinect version to use. Would be nice to be able to use the new Sensor for this.

  13. Ahmad says:

I see that again India is left out.

can you please make in possible to buy in India?

or atleast ship it to india via international shipping

  14. Roger says:

Will the Kinect v2 and SDK work on Mac or Linux?

  15. Gikero says:

    @ TheCoolDave

    Like this?…/B0040Y1LT6

It adds 10FT, ends look correct and it took me longer to type this than to Bing it.

  16. Kinect for Windows Team says:

    Hello Rasmus,

We encourage you to pre-order the Kinect for Windows v2 sensor, because it gives you more precision, responsiveness and intuitive capability to develop your informational terminal.

The Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 public beta will be released in July when pre-ordered sensors start shipping—enabling developers to start building v2 apps.  You will need the final version of the Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0 to develop commercial applications and this will be released later this year.

  17. Kinect for Windows Team says:

    Dear Dragos and Ahmad,

Thank you for your interest and questions.

There are several factors involved in bringing Kinect for Windows to new markets— from evaluating the market opportunity to building the infrastructure necessary to ensure long-term success. The Kinect for Windows v2 sensor will be available through Microsoft Store only  in regions where we are selling the device, and the Kinect for Windows SDK will be available for download globally.

If the sensor is not available in your country, you can order it in one of the countries where it is available and have it shipped to you in that country.

To keep up-to-date on the latest Kinect for Windows purchase options in your region, please visit:…/purchase.

    Thank you.

  18. Kinect for Windows Team says:

Which SDK are you referring to? 1.7, 1.8 or 2.0?

  19. Ahmad says:

    Thanks for the reply.

None of the store have international shipping.

This puts me in fix as I don't have anyone staying in these countries that can order and ship me.

A little help for us developers from non-supported countries will be appreciated

  20. Kinect for Windows Team says:

    Hello Dave,

Kinect for Windows v2 contains a hub and power supply to allow you to plug it into a standard USB outlet on a PC. The existing Kinect for Xbox One plugs into a proprietary outlet specific to Xbox One for both power and data and does not include a connectivity kit for PC use. We don't have any other information to share at this time regarding the Xbox One sensor but invite you to stay tuned here or on our website ( for the latest news about Kinect for Windows v2.

    Thank you.

  22. TheCoolDave says:

If you actually looked for a Xbox One Kinect ext cord you would of found thousands of people requesting them. Not stores selling them because they are not out there.

    >It adds 10FT, ends look correct and it took me longer to type this than to Bing it.

If you actually read what it was, you would know that the Xbox one kinect is TOTALY different than the 360's Kinnect.

  23. TheFutureIsNotSet says:

    I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that…

  24. Ashutosh Singh says:

I cannot order it in India. Is there some way.

also will the SDK v2 will be comaptible with old kinect for windows server. I have an old one.

  25. Birol Inci says:

Do you want to include Turkey?

  26. Annoyed customer says:

Kinnect for windows: why do you keep ignoring the question that is being asked? When can we get an extension cable? You guys realize that some people use projectors and can't keep their xbox next to it right? Thank you in advance for ignoring my question.

  27. Kinect for Windows Team says:

We have no news to share at this time around extension cables for Kinect for Xbox sensors.

    Thank you.

  28. Curious says:

Will we have this available in Brazil?

  29. Kinect for Windows Team says:

The Kinect for Windows v2 sensor is not available for pre-order in Brazil at this time. We will have more news to share on regions where you can purchase when general availability happens later this year.

    Thank you.

  30. Shahnawaz Alam says:

Can I expect Kinect v2 for Windows to release in India along with xBox One on 23rd Sept this year? And what are the differences between Kinect v2 fr xBox one and fr Windows ? If not significant, then can I use the xBox version to develop?

  31. LinuxSupport says:

for lots of reasons developing for windows is a non starter. Will this awesome hardware be open for other platforms like the original kinect was?

  32. Kinect for Windows Team says:

Thank you for the question, LinuxSupport.

We have no news to share at this time regarding Kinect for Windows v2 being opened to other platforms.
