NetStumbler shows wireless networks graphically

NetStumbler is a free program that graphically shows you nearby wireless networks (802.11a, b, and g). Use it to see where available network points are and what their signal strength is. There is also a PocketPC version called MiniStumbler for portable devices.

NetStumbler includes a scripting (VB script or Jscript) reference API in their documentation and can even be integrated with a GPS device and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006 to provide a map of wireless hot spots. Extensive online forums help you out.

  • Verify that your network is set up the way you intended.
  • Find locations with poor coverage in your WLAN.
  • Detect other networks that may be causing interference on your network.
  • Detect unauthorized "rogue" access points in your workplace.
  • Help aim directional antennas for long-haul WLAN links.
  • Use it recreationally for WarDriving. (Wardriving is cruising around with a laptop or a PDA, detecting Wi-Fi wireless networks, hopefully for non-malicious purposes.)

NetStubmbler is beggarware. It's free, but help the guys out with a donation if you think it's cool!
