Windows SDK Install Errors - Fixed? We Think So.

A good number of users have reported problems with installing the December CTP of the Windows SDK. Several of you have sent in your error logs, which have proven to be very useful.

Based on the logs and internal testing, it looks as if two of the MSIs we're chain installing are the problem. Here's the fix that I recommend:

  • Go into Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall Microsoft Command Shell
  • Uninstall .NET Compact Framework
  • Launch the December CTP setup

If you have had install problems in the past, can you please retry and let me know how this fix works?

This problem comes from the external MSIs we install. We're working on ways to mitigate this problem at least by the Beta 2 release in April. In the meantime, the errors that are reported will pass through the errors reported by the external MSIs, so errors will read a lot like this:

A problem occurred while installing selected Windows SDK components for use on your computer.

Installation of the "Microsoft Command Shell" product has reported the following error: Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

Please resolve the issue and then start Windows SDK setup again. If you continue to have problems with this issue, please contact the SDK team at wsdkfdb@microsoft.com and provide a copy of your installation log for investigation.

To view the installation log, click View Log, below.

To exit, click Finish.

I know this has been frustrating for many of you, but as you can see we think this is getting close to being resolved.
