Announcements on Windows 7

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’m running Windows 7 on my Dell Latitude D820 and the experience is excellent. And yesterday (while I was stuck in the snowy evening traffic of Cincinnati), Microsoft released several announcements on Windows 7. Here’s a list of points that I found interesting:

  • There will be 6 editions which are supersets, but two primary ones (bolded):
    • Windows 7 Windows Starter
      • only be offered pre-installed by an OEM
    • Windows 7 Home Basic
      • will offer Windows 7 Home Basic, only in emerging markets, for customers looking for an entry-point Windows experience on a full-size value PC
    • Windows 7 Home Premium
      • recommended choice for consumers
    • Windows 7 Professional
      • recommended choice for small businesses and for people who work at home but have to operate in an IT-managed or business environment
    • Windows 7 Enterprise
      • for our annuity customers with Software Assurance agreements
      • will not be available at retail or by OEMs for preinstallation on a new PC
    • Windows 7 Ultimate
      • designed for PC enthusiasts who “want it all” and customers who want the security features such as BitLocker found in Windows 7 Enterprise edition
  • Computer World says that we offer an upgrade license for Windows XP users; however, it will be a install-from-scratch experience
  • All versions will offer a “Anytime Upgrade”, says Computerworld
