Skype install problems? Try the updated installer


Like Jeff Sandquist, I couldn’t get Skype v1.1 to install when it was first released two weeks ago – the installer would happily kick off two processes that would then just sit there, doing nothing. Omar Shahine came up with a workaround of booting into safe mode before installing, but by this point I’d had enough and said I was “hoping that Skype fixes the problem and brings out a new installer”.

Cue Skype v1.1.073, dated 18th January 2005, which installs just fine on my tablet running XP SP2. Well, the two processes still hang around doing their strong-silent-type shtick, but only after they’ve put the right bits in the right places. So if you were one of the many Skype users having problems, give it another try.

    Turn off DEP, i had problems with upgrading from 1.0 to 1.1. It runs fine on VMWare with DEP but not the host, then i turned it off, cleared ou tth registry and files, and it ran,m then i shut it down, copied the buddy list and config files again and it worked with the those too after.

    Odd. Still its worth it for SSL IMs and voice.

    Hi, I’m trying to install Skype (downloaded on 1/5/2008) for Windows XP on a laptop with Intel Celeron.

    When I click Open, the SkypeSetup application doesn’t do anything, so I click "Run as…" and that starts the application.  The first prompt to "Select your language" has a drop-down menu with no language to choose from (blank).  I go ahead and click the User agreement, anyway, and the next dialog box says "Installing…" but just sits there for a long time seemingly doing nothing.  There are no progress bars showing any progress.  I also tried running the application from the Windows Add/Remove programs utility, but the SkypeSetup fails to launch.  Can anyone help?  I’ve rebooted so many times and restarted the application so many times, I’m going nuts.
