.Net Framework 1.1 has left the building…

For the last week or so, my machine has been regularly trying to install the MS07-040 security bulletin without success. The update logs were decidely unhelpful in a "your problem could be caused by anything" sort of way. Now, though, it's important as without this update I can't connect to vital network resources through the VPN server. My laptop is a security risk with .Net Framework 1.1 sp1 but without MS07-040.  

So kudos to my colleague Aaron Stebner for easing my pain. His Cleanup Tool allowed me to cleanse my machine of .Net Framework 1.1 - no framework, no security loop-hole, no complaining VPN server!

    I hade to install .NET FW 1.1 SP1 manually, then I could install the update. I don’t know why SP1 is not installed automatically on Vista though. So if you need it, search for the .NET FW 1.1 SP1 update and install it manually. This is what I have installed, which seems to work fine:
