Spamming the Bloggers

I knew there was some spam problems associated with being a blogger, but I had no idea how bad it was until I started this blog. I get 30 to 50 comment SPAMs a day now. I have only been blogging for a couple of weeks. I reported the IP address to my host rep, but to no avail; the comment e-mails just keep coming. And I can't just delete the sender because that is provided by my host and I would lose all beneficial comments.

I read this article called Can blog spam be solved like email spam? The author makes the process of fixing this problem look insurmountable. And maybe it is. Just let me say that httr://www.53dy.com is making most bloggers I know pay by spewing their comment spam into our inboxes. :o(

The e-mail looks like this:

Fortunately I choose to moderate incoming comments to save you from wading through what would now be hundreds of these comments. In the time it took me to write this blog I received eight more comment spams. Thanks for letting me vent.

You are not alone. I’ve been looking for a solution and thus far I haven’t come up with anything. :-

If I ever do figure it out, you can bet I’ll be making a blog entry about it. hehehe. I think I’ll call it… "Spam this, I DARE you!!!" hehehe.

    Hi,

Do you think it would cut down on spam to put one of those image controls that display text and numbers and makes people type them in to be able to submit? I think it would help if they are leaving comments through this page. But if there is an automatted comment system then maybe not. Ken.

They should be updating the msdn blogs to CS in near future. It should come with pretty spam block and if that’s not the case I have some ideas that can be incorporated.

A pretty good one is to presume that one commenting on your blog puts some thought in to the comment. And if one puts some thought to the comment then its not much to ask for putting some thought into answering a weekly question (cookie will track so no need to answer every day) about the blogger, something that you can expect the commenter to know.

With every blog having their own simple question that requires minor thought process like reading the blog entry well or whatever.. If that doesn’t kill comment spam then I do not know what will.

Due to recent change with our providers four comments have disappeared. I will try to get them to reappear. I kinda feel like a magician when I say that. :o)

  6. I use BlogX and when I upgraded to the version with the image password comment functionality, the spam disappeared.

We use mt-blacklist on our blog, which works by blocking posts containing URLS matched by regex (and they only post to get their links indexed so they can’t win).
