OGFs

I’d recommend reading Chris’ explanation of OGFs and how we use them at Microsoft. I remember when I first became aware of them being used at MS in the early 90’s as I was one of the folks responsible for producing them for early versions of Visual C++. They seemed a bit arbitrary and I couldn’t quite grock the usefulness of a subjective measure like this. Now I’m one of those “higher ups” that Chris refers to and I eagerly await updated OGF reports because they help paint the overall status “picture”. From here until we ship, we’ll refresh these ratings on a weekly basis and, along with other metrics, will use them to gauge our readiness to ship and the areas that require the most attention before we can release TFS into the wild.

When I have a spare moment, I’ll write up a description of some of the other metrics that we’re using to gauge progress.
