TechNet Update: Use Project Server with PerformancePoint Services

A couple weeks I was referred to TechNet articles which walk through the steps of creating a SharePoint Dashboards for Project Server.

More specifically, my team referred to the documentation for building a dashboard to Track Project Resource Usage as we put together a demo for one of our clients. Although the sample data is fairly 'flat', the sample offers an opportunity to build a Scorecard and associated Excel Services report. The nice thing about this documentation is that it refers to capabilities that can be set up through out-of-the-box functionality.

Regarding the sample data that we used for the demo….it is available for download, but not as a standalone download. To quote one of my teammates on the documentation team:

The sample data is not included with Project Server. If a customer would like the sample data, they can download the 2010 Information Worker Demonstration and Evaluation Virtual Machine (RTM) here:
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=751fa0d1-356c-4002-9c60-d539896c66ce&displaylang=en

We didn’t use the demo Virtual Machine (VM) to create our scenario because the BI Center on the demo VM is already heavily customized and has no resemblance to what a default out-of-the-box Project Server BI Center would look like. But we borrowed the sample data by just copying the databases over and creating a new PWA site with them. (Copying DBs like that isn’t supported in the real world, but in this case at least gives us something to look at.)

Customers can ultimately walk through the steps using their own or similar data found in the Project Reporting database.
