Women in Technology event in Sligo: 10 December

This year Microsoft Ireland has some really enthusiastic and hard-working Student Partners.  I have been quite impressed by all of the ones I have met so far.  IT Sligo Student Partner Cristina Luminea has put together what looks to be a fantastic event next week, and I’m very excited to head along to that and participate.

“Women in Technology” is an event which will bring together educated women who are successful in science and technology, college representatives, and young women who are studying technology and preparing to enter this field.

For college students, the event will be a unique opportunity to exchange their experiences, views and thoughts around the scientific studies they are doing and their future career, with the clip_image002women that already are successful in this domain and with the college representatives.

The event will also be of great benefit for high school young women, as they will be able to discuss their perspective and compare views on the opportunities for undertaking scientific and technology studies.

The event is organized around a discussion between the college students and the participating high school girls.

The discussion will focus on how young women look at academic and professional perspectives in the technology environment.  The young women will have an opportunity to share their personal experience in undertaking scientific studies and to demonstrate the solutions they have developed so far through their college projects.

This event hopes to showcase a variety of positive role models for younger women to follow.

Having spent a lot of time this past year working with things like Ireland Girl Geek Dinners and DigiYouthz as well as working with students all around Ireland and Northern Ireland, I am thrilled to see events like this getting organized.  These are the types of things I wish I had been exposed to at a younger age – I arrived into my university having no clue what one did with a computer science degree.

The event begins at 10:30am on Wednesday, December 10th in Sligo.  If you are in the Sligo area and would be interested in attending or finding out more information, please feel free to contact me at martharo [at] microsoft.com.  Many thanks to Cristina for her hard work at putting this together, and I am really looking forward to it.  See you Wednesday.
