How to Build a Hybrid On-Premise/In Cloud Application

If you are an ISV that has an application that currently runs on-premise and are thinking of moving parts of it into Windows Azure to leverage the scalability and fault-tolerance of the cloud you should be aware that Windows Azure now provides a number of ways to build applications that integrate on premise and in-cloud components.

The graphic below from Yousef A. Khalidi’s Connecting Cloud and On-Premises Applications talk at PDC10 illustrates some of the options such as:

  • Data Synchronization with SQL Azure Data Sync
  • Application-layer Connectivity & Messaging with the Windows Azure AppFabric Service Bus
  • Secure Network Connectivity with Windows Azure Connect
