We’re going to pull the download option for a while (the streaming version is still ok)

Folks - my apologies, but we've taken the decision to pull the download option for the videos. It's a classic case of "death by success" - we have so many people downloading that even with a massive pipe people are still seeing poor download speeds, as reported by a number of you.

So rather than carry on with a bad experience we're going to pull it until we can make this work more effectively. I hope people feel this is the right approach - of course, the better option would have been to have a download option that could cope with the bandwidth, but we need to deal with where we are.

The steaming option is fine though, and this is definitely the route to take. For those who were keen to use the download option (and to be honest this is the option I prefer) I apologise unreservedly that we haven't been able to provide this facility. If we can reinstate it in a form that's more effective we'll definitely do that.

You could make the videos available on rapidshare.com

I’m confident many developers have access to this file hosting service and they shouldn’t have any trouble downloading. Plus, rapidshare provides massive bandwidth.

  2. Great move.

As stated The streams are working fine – although – they are becoming a bit too popular and If you need to disconect as I did it can take a while to reconnect – but patience will work!

Given the popularity will the site hold at 5.30 at competition time?

Always fun for those (me included) with the Vista N editions who don’t have the codecs/plugin to watch the streaming versions…

well, i have been trying for the last several hours to watch these videos. the download option worked up until the videos cut out, but streaming isnt working for me AT ALL. the page I am directed to claims i dont have the windows media player plug-in installed, which is not true. i tried in IE and firefox.

all of this, most annoyingly of all, has resulted in me not knowing the answer to the competition, as i was really hoping to get hold of a copy of Vista Ultimate, and the answers wernt in the small amount of video i did manage to watch =[

Where’s the freebie site and question – searched all day –  in between listening!  BB.

Good job I managed to download the keynote before it was pulled then.

I do have to say Sanjay is one of the most boring uninspiring speakers at a microsoft conference I’ve ever seen – and I have attended many over the years.

Sounds like he is talking to a bunch of middle managers rather than developers.

If you want someone exciting, get Rafal Lukawiecki to talk about security instead 🙂

The streaming option isn’t working for me at all in either firefox or IE7.

I have put up a new post with the competition link in case people still can’t find it (it’s here http://www.microsoft.com/uk/launch2007/dev/competition.mspx)

Any idea when this will be un-pulled?

And why are the comments timestamped with US times – it looks like we’ve all commented before you even posted your entry!

  11. Keith Hall says:

It seems like the downloads prematurely stop after pretty much 90 seconds of download each time – is some firewall closing off connections?

  12. Killian says:

At the risk of repeating posts…

"Any idea when this will be un-pulled?"

  13. Ian Moulster says:

Sorry Killian, I don’t have an estimated time yet. It is being worked on as we speak, I have asked for an update from the relevant team. We obviously don’t want to put them back up until we’re sure they’re ok.
