Last November during my annual trek to Australia I told you about the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse at Sydney’s historic Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Lifehouse is a 240 million dollar independent, not-for-profit public benevolent institution providing comfort, care and cure for cancer patients in New South Wales. I was fortunate enough to be visiting Sydney on the opening day of Lifehouse and received a personal tour of the new facility by Dr. O’Brien’s widow, Gail.
Not only is Lifehouse an amazing physical facility for cancer care, it was built with technology in mind. The nine story glass and stone structure is a contemporary work of art. Clinicians and other staff make use of a wide variety of devices, computer applications and modern technology services in meeting every need of their patients. And for patients Lifehouse offers bedside access to entertainment, education, communication, and a wide variety of on-demand, on-line services.
Both staff and patients at Lifehouse are benefitting from technology developed by Microsoft partner, Oneview Healthcare. Established in 2007, Oneview Healthcare is an innovative global software company that is focused primarily on the Interactive Patient Care market. The company’s solutions enable healthcare facilities to improve productivity and performance, while delivering measurable ROI benefits. Last week at my office in Redmond, I met up with Oneview CEO, James Fitter. He told me how, for patients, Oneview Healthcare provides tailored pre and post-operative education (Oneview 360 Patient Portal), world-class entertainment services and communications services including messaging, scheduling, multi-lingual support and way-finding. For clinicians, Oneview Healthcare provides interactive access via a care team console to patient HIS information, clinical applications including PACS Imaging, CPOE administration, Nurse Rounding and survey builder/patient dashboard applications. For hospital managers, Oneview Healthcare provides measurable return on investment through improved workflows and reduced errors, improved clinical outcomes, increased patient satisfaction and potential revenue opportunities. OneView solutions are accessible on any device including TVs, PCs, or Tablet computers.
Oneview illustrates a promising trend that I have been observing lately in my world travels. That trend is the increasing availability of lighter, more flexible, and more intuitive front-end user interfaces to departmental and legacy EMR/HIS systems. As is evident from a recent report conducted by Software Advice, most clinicians remain dissatisfied with current EMR/HIS solutions. In the US, 40 percent of clinical practices are replacing their existing EMR systems. Buyers overwhelmingly prefer web-based solutions over on-premises systems, and they are increasingly looking for solutions that embrace mobile devices and workflow. While departmental and legacy EMR, practice management and billing solutions won’t be going away, I predict an increasing market for front-end “system integrating” solutions like those offered by Oneview Healthcare.
Besides the good work going on at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Australia, Oneview has been selected by UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco and Maimonides Medical Center in New York. The company’s solutions been installed at OhioHealth since 2010. They are also piloting with the largest hospital currently being built in the United States. In the Middle East, Oneview Healthcare has been awarded contacts with two Mediclinic hospitals in Dubai. The company is also on the verge of signing their first contract in Saudi Arabia. A major hospital in the Middle East is currently implementing a solution to on-board 1,200 nursing staff using a tablet device and the Oneview Healthcare system. Clearly, these opportunities are a testament to the innovative nature of Oneview’s solutions and the company’s ability to the deliver culturally diverse, commercial solutions on three continents.
All of this bodes well not only for Oneview, but for many other companies around the world that I know are currently developing more highly integrated and intuitive front-end solutions to improve clinical/administrative workflow and patient engagement in hospitals and clinics. Who’s next?
