Will “O-Zone, Dragostea din tei” be France’s top song this summer?

O-Zone, a boy's band from Romania has been number one in Italy a few months ago.

While this is not the kind of music I listen to, I must admit that the video-clip made my day. When I first saw it, I enjoyed seeing the band singing on the wing of an airplane in flight! Check it out at (free streaming):

mms://a110.v78073.c7807.e.vm.akamaistream.net/7/110/7807/4072e9ec/prisa.download.akamai.com/7807/2004/video/o_zone/o_zone_media.wmv

A transcript of the original lyrics as well as a French translation can be found at http://www.lacoccinelle.net/traduction-chanson-2310-.html.

The band did appear a month ago on CAUET's popular show and CAUET himself made a spoof of this song called “Argent - Argent“ (Money Money). You can listen to a short clip by clicking here. It seems that we will ear both songs a lot this summer ...

  1. There are a lot of other better Romanian songs which are simply not available in Europe/Worldwide. They should be because O-zone is not the best in Romanian music, but they aren’t because, well, I don’t know the reasons.

Also, Dragostea din tei is as old as almost 1 year already. I’m very bored of it. They (O-zone) have release new songs since then, and also successful, such as Numai tu, or De ce plang chitarele! πŸ™‚

But other music bands are/were even better (in my opinion). In the same area: pop/dance. Examples: ASIA, Class, Demmo, Etno, Voltaj.

I know because I am from Romania (currently, temporarily in Switzerland involved in a .NET project).

This is an odd question, but what is the significance of the Linden tree in Romania?

It seems odd to me that a tree (one of the lime family) should turn up in a pop song and I am curious as to what if any significance the tree has in Romania, so far I have failed to find and reference in any ethnobotanical texts to explain this.

  19. emily(nick name perry) says:

  23. Rodica says:

Dragostea Din Tei is related to the Linden Tree (i.e. Tei), which is the tree favored by the lovers for romantic interludes in our country.

The Romanian national poet Mihai Eminescu wrote extensively on this tree and the unforgettable romantic symbolism it carries.

  40. computerhardware says:

Hey guys, its interesting to read the suff above. Like: "O-Zone is not from Romania but it is from Moldova" and than, "Moldava is a part of Romania" and than "Well in Moldova they speak Romanian and ,what, like 70% are Romanians…so…. "

What’s up with it, guys? Interesting, isn’t it? You guys don’t know where O-Zone are from? I can tell you if you don’t.

A part of Romania is called Moldova, but "O-Zone" are from Republic of Moldova. (a diferent country) where people are not Romanians, they are Moldovians, but, if you go in history, they were called:"Basarabians" , and yes, they speak Romanian and olmost everybody speak Russian too all athers understand Russian, but it’s dificult to speak (Romanians don’t understand Russian). Like in Austria and Switzerland people speak German, but they are not German, or are they? πŸ˜‰

I like O-Zone too, I have their CD

    I live in US

  41. 2 everybody.mai ales romanians. MOLDOVA IS NOT PART OF ROMANIA! if you didn’t know about that, you should learn better history. WE ARE AN INDEPENDED COUTRY: REPUBLIC of MODLOVA.

I’m from Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, and I’m telling you that OZONE are from Chisinau as well. They were singing for may years in Moldova and were famous there. The leader is Dan Balan, as I remember he was singing rock in past. Then they went to Romania (Bucuresti), then to Italy and became popular. I’m living in USA and hear their songs in moldavian language even here on the radio, and I’m glad for them, even it is not my prefered style.

about the videoclip: it was made my Voloshin Dmitry, from Chisinau as well. Who is interested can look on: http://www.moldovanin.com/1NEWS.HTM

there are more videoclips of ozone he made, also for another ucraian and moldovian groups.

PS: if there are another questions from romanian "brothers" over the Prut about politics go to http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/md.html

  42. interesting stuff says:

"their seems to be 2 different groups singing this song Haiducii and O-zone…can someone explain this to me?? "

Yes I can explain. Hiducii are Romanians wich they stole O-Zone’s song, Haiducii should be embarasst, i know people translate other people’s songs in other laguages, but to sing in the same laguage the same song? what’s the point? Or meybe Haiducii think they are singing better O-Zone’s song? NO! the point is Romanians don’t like that Moldovians have a song wich is top hit and they copied the song to make people confused (who’s really this song is? Haiducii shouln’t do so because it’s ebarassing. UUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  43. dima moldovanu says:

the song was written by Dan Balan (OZONE) but as I know they didn’t make troubles to Haiducii. In a way haiducii "helped" Ozone to "spread" the song, but of corse they shouldn’t sing somebody’s else song without permission.

  44. victor says:

hey u guys im moldovian i think tht this sog is nice i have thir whole songs more nice songs for any questions email me at victorp62@hotmail.com

  45. al says:

yeah its a good tune – though im not french. i dont know any other french songs, so it could be a winner

  46. another romanian says:

Well, it’s more complicated than that. Republic of Moldavia is a part of Romania that has been occupied by Rusia. When USSR disintegrated, Moldavia became a separate state. They do speak the same language, Romanian language, and it’s really the same language and dialect. Austria and Germany might speak same language but different dialects which means that people can not understand eachother. Romanians and Moldavians can understand each other.

Some Moldavians prefer to think of themselfes as Romanians, while others prefer to think of themselfes as, well Moldavians (due to Russian propaganda, I would add).

Romanian is a latin based language (like Italian, French etc) and not slavic based like Russian.

"A part of Romania is called Moldova, but "O-Zone" are from Republic of Moldova. 61. HEY you………………… dima moldovanu ………………….from USA. i am romanian and if the band HAIDUCI are fucking idiots to steal somebodys song, that doesnt make the other romanians the same fucking idiots.

    .

AND IF YOU WANT TO TALK HISTORY, YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT HALF OF MOLDOVA IS PART OF ROMANIA.

IF YOU RELLY THINK THAT BEING PART OF ROMANIA IS SUCH A BAD THING, THEN WHY DID THE MOLDAVIANS WANTED TO REUNITE WITH ROMANIA. WE DONT EVEN NEED A PASSAPORT TO ENTER MOLDOVA BUT YOU GUYS NEED IT TO ENTER IN ROMANIA.

    .

I AM FROM ORADEA WHICH IS FAR FROM MOLDOVA AND I RESPECT THAT 0-ZONE MADE UP THIS SONG. BUT ALL I CARE FOR IS THAT ITS IN ROMANIAN AND I CAN UNDERSTAND THE WORDS AND I SHURE AM GLAD THAT IS TOP SONG IN EUROPE.

Hey there, I’m from Bulgaria the song really rules, it’s a total hit here in Sofia, not to mention the situation at the seaside resorts (which btw u should visit :))) I have just one question, maybe i can find the info by myself but it’ll be easier if someone helps me – o-zone are moldavians, then who are haiducii and why there’re 2 different versions of the same song – one with the 3 guys and another with the girl, which I think is more popular here, at least this is the video I’ve seen. 10x in advance and go on the same way, neighbours!!!
