Feature of the Day: Excel Report Builder Report Publishing

Excel Report Builder Report Publishing

Module: SmartList Builder

Why this feature is cool!

In Microsoft Dynamics GP 2010, any user will be able publish Excel Report Builder reports as long as certain criteria are met. The user must be one of the following:

  • sa user

  • DYNSA user

  • Any user in the db_owner database role in SQL

  • Any user in the SysAdmin fixed server role in SQL

  • Any user in the dbCreator fixed server role in SQL

This enables more users than simply ‘sa’ to publish Excel Report Builder reports, empowering users outside of IT to manage this process and extend the reach of information throughout the organization.

What does it look like?

Go to Microsoft Dynamics GP menu, then Tools > SmartList Builder > Excel Report Builder > Excel Report Builder > Publish buttonimage

It says I do not have permissions to publish the excel report however I’m a power user.

  2. DynGpTeam says:

Are you using the GP 2010 beta release?  If so, make sure your user has one of these rights in SQL if you aren’t using SA or DYNSA:

Any user in the db_owner database role in SQL

Any user in the SysAdmin fixed server role in SQL

Any user in the dbCreator fixed server role in SQL

This only works in GP 2010, not GP 10.0.

  3. Debra M. says:

How do you setup security for GP 10 allowing an user to publish a report. The user is able to do everything except publish.

  4. DynGpTeam says:

Unfortunately in GP 10, only SA can publish reports. We understand this was too limiting for many, so that is why in GP 2010 we added the feature for non-sa users to be able to publish. This is not a feature available in GP 10 however.

  5. Heather Maughn says:

    Hi Errol,

As power-user we are asked to enter the System Password to publish an Excel Report.  Is this how it is designed?

  6. DynGpTeam says:

Yes. When you create an Excel Report a new SQL Veiw is created. Only administrators can create SQL Views.
