ThinkUKnow launches in Darwin

Today we launched “ThinkUKnow Australia” cyber-safety program in Northern Territory, at Sanderson Middle School in Malak.

ThinkUKnow (TUK) is a joint initiative between the AFP and Microsoft Australia which aims to raise awareness about online safety and security issues, particularly those which affect young people. TUK was originally established in the UK by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre – known as CEOP – as an online resource to deliver interactive training and education about online safety and security.

Since the launch of the national roll-out in February this year, the successful program has delivered 80 presentations to over 2,700 parents, carers and teachers to raise awareness of the online risks and how they can protect their children from online sex offenders, cyber bullies and scammers.

AFP Acting Commissioner Peter Drennan explains that the Internet is a wonderful tool for both parents and children, but like any other part of life, there are some dangers. “This program aims to open the lines of communication between parents and children about online safety. The hope is that young people will be confident going to their parents when they have a problem online, and parents will have a better understanding of how to deal with these issues and where they can go for help."

Earlier this year TUK was awarded the SC Magazine’s Innovation award at the AusCERT Gala dinner.
