JavaScript is not just for DOM manipulation: with its growing presence in browsers, on servers, and now the desktop with Windows 8, JavaScript is fast becoming the ubiquitous programming language. Regardless of your background, odds are pretty good that JavaScript will be part of your future. JavaScript has a unique feature set that can make it challenging for object oriented programmers. In this introductory session we'll discuss some of JavaScript's pitfalls and strengths. View Understanding HTML5 and Related Technologies on Bing Maps 5:00 - 5:30pm Refreshments
6:00pm Talk : Understanding HTML5 and Related Technologies, and What They Can Do For You (and Your Career)
In this talk, Microsoft Technical Evangelist G. Andrew Duthie will talk about how HTML was the gateway that led him into a career in programming, and how the evolution of this pivotal part of the world wide web has enabled developers to go far beyond the static pages that were part of the early internet.
Whether you're a complete newbie, or have slung a little code here and there, there's something for you here. We'll explore what HTML actually is, and do a tour of what it's used for, including building web sites, building games, authoring e-books, and of course, building apps for mobile devices, both using frameworks like Apache Cordova and as native apps, where applicable.
We'll also be discussing CSS and JavaScript, since these are also essential parts of any developer's web toolkit.
Bring your questions and your curiosity, so we can make this a highly interactive session.

Parking: Metered parking is available inside the Glen garage next to the building. Metered parking is also available on Cross Campus Drive which is also adjacent to the building (just use the pedestrian bridge to enter at the third floor). There are more parking lots across the street. Signs will be there to guide you to Room 459 once inside building.
