  • HRNUG: December 2010 Meeting

    Have you ever needed to build a web site that lets users log on using their Facebook passwords? Have you ever needed to connect applications that are running inside different firewalls? Perhaps the applications are in different data centers within the same organization, or perhaps one end is in your customers' or suppliers' data centers. Perhaps you need a flexible identity management solution that lets you switch from Active Directory to Google IDs, Facebook Connect, or Live ID with no code changes. Maybe you even want to write a massively multiplayer game like World of Warcraft, but you don't want to create your own server infrastructure to support it. You can solve these problems using Windows Azure AppFabric. The solutions work even if your application is hosted in your own data center, and you never plan to run code in the cloud.
    In this session, we'll build a web site that allows you to long on with your Facebook credentials. We'll also build a chat application that works through firewalls, and demo it running across multiple networks.

  • DC ALT.NET: Unleash Your Domain - Greg Young

    Our application runs over 10,000 sustained transactions per second with a rich model. The key? Modeling state transitions explicitly. In today's world many systems have non–functional requirements that prevent them from being single database centric. This presentation looks at how Domain Driven Design can fit into such environments including extremely large scale web sites, batch processing, and even using highly scalable backing stores such as CouchDb or HyperTable. Event streams, a different way of storing the current state of an object, open many doors in this session not only in how we scale and store our domain but also in how we rationalize about it.

  • Update on Application Development with Microsoft Silverlight, IE 9 and HTML 5

    This session will provide an update on application development with Silverlight, IE 9 and HTML 5 and recapture some discussions from the Firestarter event currently scheduled on December 2nd, 2010.     How to Simplify Unit Testing with Pex and Moles
    Microsoft Research has produced two tools to dramatically simplify the construction of unit tests. We will look at Moles, a framework and Visual Studio add-in that helps to isolate your code from external dependencies. With Moles you can replace any .Net method with a delegate. Next we will examine Pex, a Visual Studio add-in that automatically generates unit tests for you. Pex analyzes your code, looking at, for example, if statements, assertions and operations that throw exceptions, to create inputs that try to achieve 100% code coverage.
    James Wren is Senior Consultant with Microsoft Services and has designed custom software for a variety of clients including the New York City Police Department, Department of Defense, and the Predator Unmanned Air Vehicle Program. He is a strong advocate for building testable, modular software and has lectured within Microsoft and at the University of Maryland.
