Events This Week – December 15th, 2008

Here are the events listed in Community Megaphone for the next week (or so) for the Mid-Atlantic area…I want to draw special attention to the two great events featuring geek extraordinaire Julie Lerman. Julie is in town from Vermont this week, and will be presenting on the Entity Framework on Tuesday at the Capitol Area .NET User Group in Vienna, VA, and she’ll be speaking at the NoVA Girl Geek Dinner on Wednesday in Arlington, VA.

Also, I’ll be in Maryland on Wednesday at the Frederick .NET User Group Meeting, speaking on geocoding, mapping, and RSS.

Tuesday, December 16, 2008 7:00 PM: CapArea.NET December Meeting - Julie Lerman on Entity Framework - The ADO.NET Entity Framework provides .NET developers with a new means of writing Data Access code using a customizable data model to query and update your data. This introductory session will give you an understanding of what the Entity Framework is all about. You will learn how to build a basic Entity Data Model and inspect it's most important parts and learn basics of querying with Entity SQL and LINQ to Entities. You will also learn how to easily access its highest level of abstraction in common data binding in a variety of application scenarios . Lastly the session will tempt you with the potential of building and using highly customized models as well as what lays beneath the surface of the Entity Framework APIs.

Julie Lerman is an independent consultant and .NET Mentor who has been designing and writing software applications for more than 20 years and is the author of O’Reilly’s Programming Entity Framework . Julie is well known in the .NET community as a Microsoft MVP, ASPInsider and INETA Speaker. Wednesday, December 17, 2008 7:00 PM: Northern Virginia Girl Geek Dinner #2 - We would like to invite all women who are in technology fields or consider themselves a "girl geek" to attend an evening to meet, socialize, and network with women in technology. Men are invited if accompanied by a Girl Geek. Appetizers and beverages will be provided. Presentation: Defining the -ette in Geekette Twenty years ago, Julie Lerman learned that she had to act and dress like the guys in order to fit into the IT Industry. Today she’s found that the cover-up is no longer necessary. Many of her “girly” qualities have become advantageous in a world of geeks where she now speaks at conferences all over the world and has just finished writing her first programming book for O’Reilly Press. Julie will share with the NOVA Girl Geeks some of this historical perspective and lessons learned. Presented by: Julie Lerman

Wednesday, December 17, 2008 7:00 PM: The right form for the job: A comparison of 3rd-party DotNetNuke form modules - There are a number of form modules on the market that work with DotNetNuke, each with their own strengths and weaknesses depending on what you need to get done with them: general information gathering, work flow management, payments processing, and even integration with other systems. Some are oriented more toward being configured by someone with a technical aptitude, while others can be set up and managed by non-technical users. We'll evaluate at least four different form modules (XMod, Dynamic Forms, Enterprise Forms, and Form Master) and discuss what kind of uses each one might be best suited for as well as some tips and tricks for getting the most out of them.
